Season Your Summer

This year, South Harrison Community Schools are participating in the Indiana Grown for School and the Department of Education’s Season Your Summer Initiative.  Basil seed packets were provided by the Indiana Grown for Schools Network.

The Indiana Department of Education works within the Indiana Grown for Schools Network. This network was established to support Farm to School and Early Childcare Education (ECE) efforts in Indiana. Farm to School generally encompasses three pillars: school gardens, local procurement, and agriculture and nutrition education.

Basil seed packets will be included in 200 random meals distributed on June 2. Check out the weekly activities below to grow your own basil and season your summer!

Week 2: Planting Activity

We can eat a lot of different parts of a plant. For herbs, we often eat the leaves (like basil). However, we might also eat the flower (lavendar), the seed (coriander), or even the root (tumeric). In some cases, we will eat multiple parts of the same plant; like fennel seeds, fennel fronds, and the fennel bulb.
